All things considered, Alvin Schultz believes he shouldn’t have been the contestant sent packing on MasterChef Monday night. In fact, he is surprised that the three judges, Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot and Joe Bastianich didn’t recognized the work he put into his dish.
“You’ve got Max [Kramer] to my left who made what Joe [Bastianich} called the worst dish he’d ever eaten and it was a basic crepes dessert, then you’ve got Jennie Kelley, who I love, but at the end of the day she put up raw pie dough,” Schultz begins. “What I did was basically a deep-fried coffee and donuts. So, the techniques I was using that day were light years ahead of anything anyone else was doing in that kitchen that day. Although it wasn’t perfectly executed I feel like I took a risk, I was doing things that were bold, different and daring and I was hoping that the judges would take that into consideration.”
He acknowledges that it is about taste and execution and that contributed to his downfall. Still, he’d do it all again, given the chance.
“I would do it in a heartbeat. The experience of being out there with people that are just as passionate about food as you are and learning from the chefs…the judges…it’s incredible. It’s life changing for sure.”
MasterChef continues weeding the wannabes down next Monday, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
