“FAST FIVE” SMOKES THE COMPETITION AT THE BOX OFFICE

The newest installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise Fast Five left the competition in the dust landing for a first place finish snagging a whopping $83.6 million in box office between Friday and Sunday. That’s over half the $125 mil it cost to produce the pic.

The animated feature Rio, which had been number one last week, dropped to second place in its third week in theaters and brought in an additional $14.4 million. That brings Rio’s total receipts to $103.6 mil, which is well past the $90 mil production budget.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family slipped from second to third place this weekend. That’s a 59.9-percent drop from its debut in theaters last week.

Water For Elephants raised an additional estimated $9.1 mil in its second week out. That is still unimpressive, however, it brings the total that much closer to its $38 million budget. The box office sits at $32.2 mil.

Prom, which debuted Friday, barely cracked the number-five position with $5 million in receipts. Still, the movie only cost $8 mil so it has a good chance of recouping its budget. And the other new entry in theaters, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil slid in at sixth place with a miniscule $4.1 million over the weekend.

Rounding out the top 10:

7.    Soul Surfer $3.3 million

8.    Insidious $2.6 million

9.    Hop $2.557 million

10.  Source Code $2.532 million
