It’s a good weekend when your flick – in this case The Hangover Part II – makes its money back in its debut outing in theaters. The pic landed at number one while picking up $117.6 million between Thursday and Monday and that pushed the box office $37.6 mil over its $80 million budget – and all that dough is despite a number of negative and lukewarm reviews.
Kung Fu Panda came in second place with $53.6 million beginning Thursday of last week. A nice showing, however, the animated sequel cost $150 mil to produce so it has a ways to go before recouping its budget.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides dropped from first to third place in its second weekend in theaters. The movie reaped $39.5 million more between Friday and Monday, which brings its total receipts to $153.1 million to date. That is still considerably lower than the productions costs of $250 mil, but there is still plenty of time throughout the summer season to make its money back.
Bridesmaids is still bringing in an audience. The pic dropped a modest 20.7 percent in its third week out and raised an additional $16.5 million over the holiday weekend. That pushes the total box office to $85.1 mil to date – well over its budget of $32.5 million.
Thor landed at number five this week and took in an extra $9.4 million between Friday and Monday. It has dropped 39.2 percent, but with this added box office the pic sits at $159.7 mil, which means it has surpassed its $150 million price tag.
Rounding out the top 10:
6. Fast Five $6.4 million
7. Midnight in Paris $1.9 million
8. Something Borrowed $1.860 million
9. Rio $1.825 million
10. Jumping the Broom $1.825 million
