Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides snagged an enormous $90.1 million at the box office this weekend. This is the fourth installment in the series and it appears interest is as high, though not quite as high as the previous sequels for the new adventure. Dead Man’s Chest $135.6 mil for its opening weekend, while At World’s End took in $114.7 million for its debut in theaters. However, $90.1 mil gives this new adventure the distinction of being the 12th highest May opening ever.
Bridesmaids added $21 million to its totals between Friday and Sunday and landed in second place for the second week in a row. That’s great news for Universal that needed a hit after a year of uneventful films. The flick has amassed a total to date of $59.5 mil bringing it well over the $32.5 million production costs.
Thor finally dropped from its first place perch for the past two weeks to third place over the weekend. The pic brought in an additional $15.5 mil bringing its total receipts to $145.4 million. That’s still a tad below the $150 price tag of the film.
Fast Five dropped from third to fourth place and bagged an additional $10.6 million to its box office tally. That takes the totals to an estimated $186.2 million, which is considerably over the $125 mil budget.
Rio held its ground at number five again this week and generated an additional $4.650 million between Friday and Sunday. Rio has now easily surpassed the $90 mil production costs.
