Wedding bells are ringing on Castle, but not for Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Detective Kate Becket (Stana Katic).
Despite all that sexual tension and Castle’s declaration of love when Becket was shot at the end of last season, it is Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Jennifer Scout Duffy-O’Malley (Juliana Dever) who’ll be walking down the aisle.
“It’s an interesting thing because weddings are always those times when everybody thinks about their own relationships and their own decisions,” Dever points out. “I think [weddings] cause people to take stock of their relationships. So, in no less sense Becket and Castle think about their relationship and what they mean to each other in this episode as well.”
If Juliana’s last name seems familiar it’s because the actress is the real-life wife of Seamus Dever. And though they had a lovely wedding of their own, the Castle star tells us their budget was way less than what ABC shelled out for the TV nuptials.
“We did our real-life wedding on a budget. Julie and I got married five years ago and I think our wedding budget was about $10,000, so automatically the budget was higher,” Dever recalls with a laugh. “She’s wearing a designer dress and I’m wearing a designer tuxedo so that was different. We get married in a church [on the show] and in real-life Julie and I got married in a field in the Sequoia National Forest where my parents live. All my friends pitched in and we planned our real wedding as if we were doing a play. We did everything we could to make it as nice as we could with the budget that we had.”
Still, there will be an equal amount of excitement leading up to the ceremony thanks to an investigation that leads the gang to Detective Ryan’s bride-to-be.
“Jenny and Ryan decide to go on a cleanse and nobody understands why they’re doing it, but they’re doing it to purify themselves before the big day,” Dever explains. “Jenny is connected to a case and they find out some information that might be damaging to Ryan. [Ryan’s coworkers are] very protective about the way they explore the lead, and the big thing is whether they should reveal this information to Ryan because of how it will affect him. It’s kind of neat how they wove Jenny into the case.”
The actor promises all sorts of additional gag-like elements from a fight over a donut to who will be each wedding guest’s plus one.
West Coast fans of Castle will be able to chat with Dever in real time during tonight’s broadcast (10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. PT), via Twitter (@seamusdever).
