There are a few movies debuting this weekend, but none with as much hype as the action-adventure flick based on the comic book hero Thor.
Thor hits 3,955 theaters nationwide and is expected to be the top destination for moviegoers between Friday and Sunday. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. So, as his comeuppance, Thor is banished to Earth, where he’s stuck living among humans. It is only after a dangerous villain sends his goon squad down to invade the Earth that Thor learns how to behave like a real hero.
It’s kind of fun that Kenneth Branagh, who made his name in the U.S. with a number of traditional William Shakespeare movie adaptations, would be the director on a blockbuster summer flick. But then, the story at its core is loaded with the kind of elements that suggest a classic tale of family betrayal and redemption.
Branagh has also chosen a cast of well-respected actors to bring the comic book characters to life including Oscar winners Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman.
The Warner Bros release Something Borrowed kicks off in 2,904 theaters with Ginnifer Goodwin starring as Rachel, a savvy attorney at a top New York law firm.
She’s also unhappily still single and is constantly being reminded of her lonely existence by engaged best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson). But after celebrating her 30th, Rachel ends up in the arms of the guy she’s had a thing for since law school, Dex (Colin Egglesfield), who is, as luck would have it, Darcy‘s fiancé. Rachel is struggling with that dilemma, but that’s just one of the many love triangles going on in Something Borrowed.
Rachel’s confidant Ethan (John Krasinski) is dodging Rachel’s friend Clair (Ashley Williams), who has a crush on Ethan, while Ethan has a secret crush of his own. And another friend, Marcus (Steve Howey), is hot for Rachel, but she’s just one of many of his romantic interests.
In other words, get out the scorecard to keep track, but you can also probably guess who ends up with whom.
Jumping the Broom, TriStar’s romantic-comedy is settling into 2,035 theaters to start its box office run this weekend. It’s a collision of worlds when two African-American families from divergent socioeconomic backgrounds get together for a wedding in Martha’s Vineyard.
Look for the nuptials to be undermined, of course. Angela Bassett, Paula Patton, Loretta Devine, Laz Alonzo and Mike Epps star in the pic.
