Audiences “Rise” Up and Go Bananas for “Apes”

It appears that moviegoers aren’t quite done with the Planet of the Apes franchise.

As expected, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the prequel to the classic movie Planet of the Apes, landed in first place and took in an estimated $54 million over the weekend.

The Smurfs firmly held onto its second place position and raised an additional $21 mil between Friday and Monday.

Cowboys & Aliens dropped to third place in its second week out and nabbed an unimpressive $15.7 million in additional revenue. That brings its total box office to $67.3 mil to date, which is still quite far off from its $163 million budget.

The Change-Up debuted in fourth place with a dismal $13.5 million raised between Friday and Sunday. This is another mediocre showing for a Universal movie. The studio has been struggling to achieve box office gold with most of its releases for a few years now.

Captain America: The First Avenger dropped from third to fifth place this weekend grabbing an additional $13 million in its third week in theaters. That bring its total box office to an estimated $143 mil and pushing it $3 million over its $140 million production costs.

Rounding out the top 10:

6.    Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II $12.160 million

7.    Crazy, Stupid, Love $12.1 million

8.    Friends with Benefits $4.7 million

9.    Horrible Bosses $4.6 million

10.  Transformers: Dark of the Moon $3 million
