“So You Think You Can Dance” Winner – Melanie Moore

SO YOU THINIK YOU CAN DANCE: Winner Melanie Moore on the live finale on FOX. ©2011 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Adam Rose/FOX

After a two-hour finale, Melanie Moore took the title of America’s Favorite Dancer on season eight of So You Think You Can Dance Thursday night.

Moore beat out runner-up Sasha Mallory (though both were gnarly chicks) and grabbed the hefty paycheck of $250,000.

After the show (and in the video below), the judges weighed in on Moore – and Moore reacts, of course. All the pros agreed that either of the two women was deserving of the title.

SYTYCD Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe was convinced, however, that Moore should have won – and he gained a new-found faith in America that we finally understand the nuances of dance.

JAMEY JOHNSON PERFORMING AT FARM AID WITH WILLIE NELSON

Jamey Johnson courtesy Webster & Associates

Mercury Nashville singer/songwriter Jamey Johnson will perform at Farm Aid 2011 at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., on Saturday, Aug. 13, joining his friend and tour mate Willie Nelson and the other Farm Aid founders to support our nation’s family farmers.

Farm Aid is the longest running benefit concert series in America, raising more than $39 million to help family farmers thrive all over the country while inspiring millions of people to learn about the Good Food movement.

“When I was a kid, we had a little bit of land and just about every bit of it was farm,” says Johnson, who also performed at Farm Aid last year. “We would grow peas over here, a little bit of corn over there, and squash and figs. I can’t even name for you everything that we grew from this land. But the fact that we couldn’t make enough money to sustain it meant that we had to eventually move off of it and let it go to someone else.

“When I drive by that property today, there’s not a farm there anymore,” says Johnson, a native of Alabama. “It’s just grass, and that’s a shame. As much love and as much care as we took making sure that these different crops survived and thrived every year, it’s kind of a shame to see it turn into a hayfield. And that goes for everybody who wants to farm. They should be able to make enough money off of the sized land or the sized crops they are doing to sustain that much land, and they can’t.”

Johnson says you don’t have to know a farmer to care about Farm Aid.

“Farm Aid is not just important to me, it’s important to anybody who eats,” he says. “Farm Aid is set up to look after the family farmer, the ones that actually take part in the same crops that they produce for other people. They are not just growing food to send down the line; their family eats the same foods that they sell.”

Johnson is a big believer in Farm Aid’s practice of showcasing Homegrown concessions, featuring local, organic or family farm-sourced ingredients at the event. “It makes no sense to cater in a meal from a frozen food or something like that when you’ve got people right up the road that grow the same product and actually grow a superior product,” he says. “The thing you’ll see at Farm Aid is people who practice what they preach. They want you to see the fruits and vegetables of their labor.

“It doesn’t take you long to realize that these are skilled farmers. For most of these farmers, it’s a trade that has been passed down from generation to generation, and as far back as they can remember, you know everybody in their family did this for a living. So this is a skill; it’s an art.”

Johnson recently completed the Country Throwdown Tour with Willie Nelson and he’s now touring the nation with his own shows. On Sept. 1, Johnson will serve as the first official performer at the Grand Opening of Track 29, Chattanooga, Tenn.’s new premiere entertainment venue.

While the set lists and venue sizes may change, one thing remains constant with his shows. “What the fans can expect is a great deal of good music by highly trained musicians that never sit back on their accomplishments,” he says. “My stage is full of the best musicians I could find, and we’ve gotten to be real good friends, as close as family over the past several years. Every time we pack a stage, we are doing some songs for the first time that night that we’ve never even had a rehearsal on that maybe we haven’t heard in quite awhile. So we get to come up with our own unique versions of it.

“Just the other night, we pulled out an old song that I’ve never played onstage but I’ve been hearing my whole life, and we managed to do a version of it that doesn’t sound like anybody else,” he says. “I feel that’s what our fans pay for when they come to see us play live. They want to see that degree of spontaneity. I mean, you may hear some stuff that we do every night, you may hear some stuff we do quite often, but every night we try to branch out a little bit and try something out. If it falls apart, I guarantee you, you’ll see us standing around and laughing at one another and we’ll go and do something else.”

THE ACADEMY PRESENTING ‘A TRIP TO THE MOON’

'A Trip To The Moon' showing what happens when you land there

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present A Trip to the Moon (1902) on September 6, at the Academy‘s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

This historic touchstone film by Georges Méliès‘s will be screened in its original hand-colored version direct from its re-premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this May.

An original color print of A Trip to the Moon was recently discovered in poor condition and underwent delicate work to rescue and digitize the elements.  The restoration was carried out by Lobster Films, the Groupama Gan Foundation for Cinema and the Technicolor Foundation for Cinema Heritage, and took place at Technicolor Los Angeles.  The French band Air composed an original soundtrack to accompany the film.

The program will be introduced by film historian and archivist Serge Bromberg of Lobster Films and Tom Burton, head of the preservation department at Technicolor Los Angeles.

A newly restored print of A Trip down Market Street (1906), recorded by the Miles Bros. of San Francisco days before the famed earthquake leveled the city, along with rare primitive films such as 3D versions of early Méliès films and turn-of-the century attempts at sound films, will round out the evening’s screenings.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.oscars.org, at the Academy box office (8949 Wilshire Boulevard, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), or by mail.

Doors will open at  the Samuel Goldwyn Theater (September 6) at 6:30 p.m., where the show begins at 7:30 p.m.  For more information call (310) 247-3600 or visit www.oscars.org.

"All My Children" show creator Agnes Nixon addresses the press at Disney-ABC Television Group's 2010 Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, California. (ABC/RICK ROWELL) AGNES NIXON

Agnes Nixon, creator of ABC’s daytime drama All My Children, returns to the show as Agnes Eckhart, a long standing board member of Pine Valley Hospital.

Nixon, often called the “queen of the modern soap opera,” created All My Children in 1970.

She was a pioneer in daytime, writing for such shows as Another World, Guiding Light, As the World Turns and Search for Tomorrow before going on to create One Life to Live, All My Children, The City and Loving.  It was on these shows where Nixon brought many current and important social issues to the small screen.  She was honored in 2010 with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 37th Annual Daytime Emmys.

Nixon first appeared on All My Children in 2005 as the character Agnes Eckhardt, a role she created to celebrate the show’s 35th Anniversary.  This time around, Agnes Eckhardt is admitted to Pine Valley Hospital where Cara (Lindsay Hartley) and David (Vincent Irizarry) tend to her.  She also crosses paths with Erica Kane (Susan Lucci). Agnes has a profound effect on all of the characters she interacts with that changes the course of their lives.  Nixon’s first episode airs on August 31, 2011.

Hallmarked for its iconic brand of humor and satire, All My Children has been prized with more than 30 Daytime Emmy Awards over the past four decades including the three-time top honor of Outstanding Drama Series.  Praised for its socially conscious foundation, the show has been at the forefront of such issues as AIDS, rape, abortion, alcoholism, spousal abuse and racial bias, among others.

Audiences “Rise” Up and Go Bananas for “Apes”

It appears that moviegoers aren’t quite done with the Planet of the Apes franchise.

As expected, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the prequel to the classic movie Planet of the Apes, landed in first place and took in an estimated $54 million over the weekend.

The Smurfs firmly held onto its second place position and raised an additional $21 mil between Friday and Monday.

Cowboys & Aliens dropped to third place in its second week out and nabbed an unimpressive $15.7 million in additional revenue. That brings its total box office to $67.3 mil to date, which is still quite far off from its $163 million budget.

The Change-Up debuted in fourth place with a dismal $13.5 million raised between Friday and Sunday. This is another mediocre showing for a Universal movie. The studio has been struggling to achieve box office gold with most of its releases for a few years now.

Captain America: The First Avenger dropped from third to fifth place this weekend grabbing an additional $13 million in its third week in theaters. That bring its total box office to an estimated $143 mil and pushing it $3 million over its $140 million production costs.

Rounding out the top 10:

6.    Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II $12.160 million

7.    Crazy, Stupid, Love $12.1 million

8.    Friends with Benefits $4.7 million

9.    Horrible Bosses $4.6 million

10.  Transformers: Dark of the Moon $3 million

Discovery Piques Our “Curiosity”

Prof. Hawking sitting in the dining hall at his college in Cambridge. Photo courtesy of Discovery.

It didn’t take convincing to get filmmaker Eli Roth psyched up for the new Discovery series Curiosity. Once the Hostel director heard who one of the other participants was, it was a no-brainer.

Discovery called me and said, ‘We have a new series and so far we have Stephen Hawking and you…’ ”

Of course, Roth says that with a laugh, but he really was eager to jump into the project because of his “interest in the nature of fear.”

In fact, he says despite the gruesome scenes in his slasher flick Hostel, he’s always been more interested in why “someone would do such a terrible thing vs. the act (of murder) itself.”

So, naturally, evil will be the focus of his exploration for Curiosity, but it’s not the only element included in the show. The program will also delve into a number of subjects from parallel universes to exactly why set is fun.

Curiosity kicks off Sunday night, 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on all the Discovery channels including Discovery, The Learning Channel and Animal Planet. Other hosts scheduled to appear include Robin Williams, Brendan Fraser, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Samuel L. Jackson.

HANK WILLIAMS ‘RARE AND UNRELEASED’ SONGS AVAILABLE

Time Life announces the release of 'Hank Williams: The Legend Begins,' image courtesy Kirt Webster/Webster PR

Time Life and the Estate of Hank Williams announced the release of newly discovered historic Williams’ recordings that are meticulously restored.

Hank Williams: The Legend Begins is a 3-CD package that offers one disc entitled Rare And Unreleased, which contains the earliest recordings of a 15-year-old Williams and four songs from a home recording in 1940.

The other two CDs are from Williams’ first syndicated radio show in 1949, Health And Happiness, that have been restored using the technology that earned so many plaudits for the Grammy nominated project, The Complete Mother’s Best Recordings….Plus! This highly developed sound technology delivers Williams’ performances as they were originally heard more than sixty years ago.

A 1940 home recording shows how much Williams’ voice had matured in two years when he rocks out to four classics of American music; Freight Train Blues, New San Antonio Rose, St. Louis Blues, and Greenback Dollar.  The songs ultimately ended up in the possession of Williams‘ daughter, Jett Williams, and the tunes show a wide range of musical styles from an ancient Appalachian song to popular charted hits of the era.

By 1949, Williams had two major hits under his belt and was a member of the Grand Ole Opry.  It was at this time he recorded his first syndicated radio series, The Health And Happiness Show.  The program’s name was tied to the sponsor of the show…..Hadacol, a patent medicine that contained 12% alcohol. Forty-nine songs from the show have been restored on Hank Williams: The Legend Begins which gives superior quality to these historic CDs. The shows include songs, like Tramp on the Street, that he never performed elsewhere.

Also included on the Rare and Unreleased CD is an additional program.  The March Of Dimes show features several songs and a touching monologue from Williams, in which he talks about the fear of polio that blighted every summer in the early 1950’s; in particular, he expresses his concern that Hank, Jr. might contract the disease. Williams died shortly before the cure was announced that ended the scourge.

Hank Williams: The Legend Begins will be released on September 13, 2011.

In Theaters – August 5th, 2011

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but what if two completely different men; one family guy, the other womanizer, trade bodies? Well, that’s the premise of The Change-Up, a wacky comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman. And laughs abound.

OK, yes it is a worn storyline and yes, you can probably predict just how it unfolds, so if you like this sort of comedy (no matter how many times you’ve seen it before), you might just enjoy The Change-Up,

I could point out that this is yet another film from Universal, who has had a negligible amount of hit movies in the last few years, but that would be cruel. Maybe this means that Universal’s entry from last week, Cowboys & Aliens will hold onto its barely-number-one position.

But, don’t bet on it. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is also opening this weekend and safe money is on that big-budged feature taking the top spot.

And Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a prequel to the hugely successful Planet of the Apes franchise. Which begs the question as to what’s left to tell in that story after the big reveal of the astronauts being on Earth in the future?

Four sequels and one remake later FOX is confident that the time is right to actually see how the apes transitioned into power over humans. And, of course, that is a result of mans own genetic engineering that leads to the development of intelligent apes.

It’s a blockbuster, with plenty of exciting stunts and maneuvers – and as long as you go into the theaters knowing what to expect you won’t be disappointed. Besides, the apes just look cool this time.

Paul McCartney to Speak with U.K. Police After Voicemail is Allegedly Hacked

Sir Paul McCartney is one of the people in the U.K. whose privacy was violated in a recent phone hacking scandal – and he’s none too happy about it.

While being interviewed at the biyearly Television Critics Association via satellite for his upcoming Showtime special The Love We Make: Paul McCartney and the Concert for New York City Thursday, the music icon admitted he plans to speak with law enforcement at the end of his current tour.

“I’m going to talk to the police because apparently I have been hacked,” McCartney confirmed. “I don’t actually know much about it, but they won’t tell anyone except the person themselves. So, I will be talking to them about that.”

McCartney’s ex-wife, Heather Mills recently claimed that a senior Mirror journalist admitted to hacking voicemails that McCartney had left for Mills.

It’s not like most of his life hasn’t been lived in a virtual fishbowl, but the former Beatles member admits that the latest revelation is unnerving.

“I don’t think it’s great,” he stresses. “I do think it is a horrendous violation of privacy and I do think it’s been going on a long time and I do think that more people than we know knew about it. But, I think I should just listen and hear what the facts are before I comment.”
