VINCE GILL’S ‘GUITAR SLINGER’ OUT OF THE STUDIO, INTO THE STREETS

Vince Gill on his newest album “Guitar Slinger” courtesy MCA Nashville

Today marks the release of Vince Gill’s Threaten Me With Heaven, a powerful song that is the debut single from Guitar Slinger, which is due Oct. 24 and is his first new album in five years.

Gill wrote or co-wrote every song on the album, including Threaten Me With Heaven, which he created with his wife Amy Grant, Dillon O’Brian and Will Owsley, who died last year.

“‘Threaten Me With Heaven’ is a song that I was fortunate to get to be a part of,” he says. “My wife Amy, Dillon O’Brian and Will Owsley were at our home working on that song. I think I had been playing golf or something. I walked into the house and they said, ‘Hey, we’re kind of stuck.’ I’m glad I came home because I got to sit down and help finish a great idea.

“Since I recorded it, my friend Will, who played guitar and sang on it, took his own life, so the song has a really profound impact on me now. The message of the song and what it is saying, I will probably always think of my guitar-playing buddy.”

Music Row’s Robert K. Oermann says, “This gorgeous meditation would be heart melting even acoustic and unadorned. As it happens, the production swells with inspiring choral backing, celestial guitar work and echoey ambiance. If it doesn’t produce a lump in your throat, you are made of stone.”

“This album is just where I am,” he says. “Obviously I write songs different at 54 than I would at 24 or 34. Your life experience is different every time you go there to create something.

“About half of this record has a whole lot more guitar playing in it than I have probably ever done on a record,” he says. “My musicianship is starting to really be the first thing that people are starting to see and think about when they are thinking about me.”

Gill recently played lead guitar on two new songs for Alice Cooper, who told the Toronto Sun, “He’s the Jeff Beck of country. He made my head spin.”

“There are certain songs that are strictly vehicles for me to play guitar, and those kinds of things I really just want a great feel so that I can play a lot,” Gill says. “Then the other half of the songs are great story songs, songs of redemption and even a duet with Amy. There are some really tragic songs on there.”

Gill has sold more than 26 million albums, won 20 Grammys and 18 CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year twice. He has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year.

KENNY ROGERS IN BILLBOARD’S ANNIVERSARY ‘ADULT CONTEMPORARY’

Kenny Rogers courtesy Webster & Associates

According to Billboard, Kenny Rogers’ 28 Adult Contemporary Top 10’s are sixth-best all-time, and fourth-best among men, trailing only Elton John, Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley.

Kenny Rogers‘ feats on the AC chart include 47 hits, tying him with Barry Manilow for seventh-most in the chart’s history. No core country artist has crossed over more titles to AC.  Rogers has scored eight AC No. 1s.

Rogers: “I remember when [the AC charts] were established, I thought it was so cool. I’ve always been a believer in the strength of the song. My problem is I’m a country singer who’s had a lot of other musical influences, so my stuff is going to tend to be more AC. That’s always been my slam in country music, that I was never a true country artist, even though “Coward of the County,” “Daytime Friends,” “Buy Me a Rose,” “The Gambler,” those kinds of things, were truly country records. When you add to that “Through the Years,” “You Believe in Me,” “You Decorated My Life,” those were not country, but because I had power at country music, they sold country.

“Country always wanted to really be country, and I don’t blame them – be what you want to be. I spoke at a country seminar one year, and I told them, ‘Guys, what you’re trying to do is protect a type of music, and those of us who are out there doing it are trying to protect careers. We’re trying to last longer, touch more people with our music. I guarantee you in three years you won’t be playing Garth Brooks or Shania Twain.’ This was in the peak of their careers-and they all laughed at me. Sure enough, three years later, they weren’t playing them. So what are [these artists] supposed to do if they don’t have some other source of income [or] airplay other than country? When that’s over, our careers are over.

“[My crossover hits] turned a lot of people toward country music that wouldn’t have come to it otherwise. When they realized I was singing country sentiment with a little more accessible tonality, then I think they came in. And the great thing about country is once you come in, you don’t leave. It’s such a pure music.

“I never set out to be on the AC charts; I set out to do good songs. When I was on the charts I paid a lot of attention to them. I used to love to pick up the charts and see where songs were, where they were going, how they were doing. I’ve always tried to find songs that say what every man would like to say and every woman would like to hear. When you think of “Through the Years,” “You Decorated My Life,” “Lady,” that’s what those are. What man wouldn’t want to say, “Lady, I’m your night in shining armor and I love you,” and what lady wouldn’t want to hear that?”

As told to Ray Waddell.

‘ZZ TOP’ TRIBUTE ALBUM BY MAJOR ARTISTS

'ZZ Top' album cover, 'A Tribute From Friends' courtesy Todd Brodginski/Mitch Schneider: MSO

The music and legacy of ZZ Top –“That Little ol’ Band from Texas,” that has been part of the world’s musical landscape for over 40 years–will be celebrated with the October 11 release of A Tribute From Friends.

The album, to be released by Show Dog-Universal Music, features 11 classic ZZ Top songs interpreted by top-flight artists working in a broad range of musical genres.

All of the album’s tracks have been newly recorded, specifically for the project.  These include Filter’s performance of Gimme All Your Lovin,” Grace Potter & The Nocturnals’ take on Tush, as well as Wyclef Jean’s Rough Boy, Legs from Nickelback and Wolfmother’s interpretation of Cheap Sunglasses.

The album kicks off with “Sharp Dressed Man,” from The M.O.B., Mick Fleetwood’s ad hoc group that includes fellow Fleetwood Mac founder John McVie as well as Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and guitar great Jonny LangFleetwood commented, “We’re delighted to honor ZZ Top this way.  Their legacy, like that of the original Fleetwood Mac, is steeped in the blues we all love so much.  I know that Steven and Jonny feel as strongly about their legacy as John and I do.”

After Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard, the original–and continuing–members of ZZ Top were informed that A Tribute From Friends was in the offing, they issued the following statement:

“When we were told there was going to be a ZZ Top tribute album a while ago and logically asked, ‘Who are we paying tribute to?’  Then we found out that a bunch of great artists were paying tribute to us and we were in disbelief.  For the past 40 or so years, all we’ve done is get out there and crank it and try to have a good time while doing so. To a great extent, we’ve succeeded since we’re still having a good time so that would be reward enough for ‘the same three guys playing the same three chords.’ Now comes A Tribute From Friends and we’re so delighted that our music resonates with these great musicians whom we so admire.”

A Tribute From Friends also includes Waitin’ for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago by Daughtry, Got Me Under Pressure from Duff McKagan’s LOADED and Mastodon’s version of Just Got Paid. Coheed & Cambria contributed the anthemic Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers while country superstar Jamey Johnson’s track is the seminal La Grange.

Of their invitation to be a part of the album, lead singer Chris Daughtry said, “We were completely honored! A classic great band with amazing songs? We’re in!” And of ZZ Top’s music, “It’s classic! Simple chord progressions, great riffs with hooky choruses…very inspiring to a band like us.”

The co-executive producer of  is Carl Stubner, ZZ Top’s manager, who noted, A Tribute From Friends underscores the legacy of ZZ Top in the most musical way possible and illustrates just how important Billy, Dusty and Frank have been to successive generations.  It was a privilege to work with the pantheon of brilliant artists who contributed their efforts and so much love to this project.”
