Immortals Descends Upon Earth for the Top Spot at the Box Office

The big, splashy fantasy film, Immortals was the top flick in theaters this weekend. The movie brought in an estimated $32 million, making its first foray out the number one film between Friday and Monday. It still has far to go to recoup its $75 million price tag, though it’s a pretty safe bet it ought to be able to reach that small goal soon.

In not so close second place was the Adam Sandler gender-bender comedy Jack and Jill with $26 mil.

Puss in Boots continues to have long legs at the box office. The animated comedy raised an additional $25.5 million over the weekend. That brings the total revenue generated to date to an estimated $108.8 mil in just three weeks.

Tower Heist dropped 45.1 percent and went from second to fourth place over the weekend. The action-adventure snatched an additional $13.2 mil bringing the box office total to $43.9 million. That’s still much lower than its $75 mil production costs since its debut on November 4th.

J. Edgar landed in fifth position raking in a modest $11.5 million for its debut in theaters. The Clint Eastwood directed biopic was in 1910 theaters, which is considerably less than the other top entries. Those pics averaged 3 thousand-plus movie houses.

Rounding out the top 10:

6.    A Very Harold & Kurmar 3D Christmas $5.9 million

7.    In Time $4.1 million

8.    Paranormal Activity 3 $3.6 million

9.    Footloose (2011) $2.7 million

10.  Real Steel $2 million

ELIZABETH BERKLEY MAKING AN ABSURD WORLD A BETTER PLACE IN “LUCKY CHRISTMAS”

Elizabeth Berkley in "Lucky Christmas"

Elizabeth Berkley talked to Entertainment Heartbeat about her new holiday film, Lucky Christmas concerning a single mother who decides to be happy despite the world she has to face.

Looking back on her own career, it would appear that Berkley is far from her character (Holly), the luckless woman laboring at three jobs that the film showcases.

We wondered if Berkley could relate to the kind of life that Holly experiences.   “…Everyone has different struggles, and you never know;  I can relate to someone who continues to take themselves and their life to another level.  Someone might look at my situation and say, ‘oh, it’s not like that,’ but maybe I’m deciding for different goals.  So I know what it is to struggle, I know what it is to work hard, I think it’s the dancer in me that has a very strong work ethic, to take each problem to another level, and I’m very grateful for the abundance and wonderful things but I’ve worked very hard and never had anything handed to me.”

An actress should be able to play any character despite the contrast, but Berkley believes that her own arduous journey can give a more believable life to Holly than just posturing expressions to dialog.

“It’s not like I worked right out of the gate and moved to California and had famous parents who helped me get through the door, it’s been all hard work.  I know what it’s like to have a clear-cut goal and a vision and to do the hard work to get there, and it’s not always easy  – and you have to go through highs and lows and have to be passionate on what you do, and in Holly’s case she’s really passionate about what she does, she knows she has a gift for it, she knows she can make people happy with it, so when you don’t get to use your gift as often as you want that can sometimes be a painful thing.”

One of Berkley‘s own passions is helping young women raise their self-esteem (Ask-Elizabeth.com), so we asked if she had issues with Hollywood’s attitude of contrasting beauty with intellect while having to validate her own considerable intelligence and academic accomplishment.

“I’ve never felt the need to overcompensate and prove.  I grew up around women (Berkley’s mother and grandmother) who were not afraid to stand on their intelligence and strength and not apologize for it, which is huge.  So I have these examples, there was this certain fearlessness, and what kind of comes with that one aspect is not worrying so much about what people do think or don’t think…I’m in an industry that plays on people’s (confidence) and when you deal with critics or something your insecurities can rise in ways you can’t believe.   I’m not saying that I’m exempt from hoping or needing or worrying or wanting for people to know who I really am, but I think it was more when I was younger, because I think when you get older you really realize how much time is wasted trying to please other people or make them guess who you are when there’s a way to kind of turn down the volume on that.  One of the things I help the girls with is to find out in a time where so many things are around us telling us who we are and who we should be, the opportunity where we come together is who we are, like what do we value, what do we really care about.”

REGGIE LEE ON THE EVOLVING JOURNEY OF “GRIMM”

Reggie Lee as Sgt. Wu on "Grimm" - Photo by: Eric Ogden/NBC

Entertainment Heartbeat got a sideways interview with busy actor  Reggie Lee, who really  doesn’t have 10 minutes to spare but kindly allowed some questions while on the run.

Lee has been working nonstop since 1996 and at the moment has three feature films ready for release next Summer (including The Dark Knight Rises), but is most enthusiastic about his new NBC hit series Grimm.

We were curious what Lee thought of working on a supernatural set…”amidst beasts?” Lee says, finishing the question for us. “The great thing for us as an actor especially in this one it’s a very reality based show for us, you know there’s one person that’s able to see these people morph into different characters of the Grimm fairy tales…In one way I’m so jealous that he’s able to throw himself into this different world, like Alice in Wonderland, getting thrown into that hole, on the other hand, it’s a very hard job for him (David Giuntoli, who plays Grimm descendant Nick Burkhardt), because his reality is very different from our reality.”

While the premise of Grimm is still fresh and exciting, the series will eventually have to evolve as the characters get wise to Nick’s secrets.

“How long can you go on without his partner finding out?  Lee says, knowing that the road may soon take a new direction.  “I think that’s going to be the exciting part of the show, when you see six series regulars start trying to figure out what’s going on, so we’ll go down that road and see what happens.”

While Lee’s character is one of the appeals of Grimm, he also remains an enthusiastic fan.  “They’ve really done a great job in taking these fairy tales and making it very individual to each particular episode and what I like too is that sometimes for us as actors we don’t find out until the very end of the episode; ‘oh it’s that fairly tale,’ because they’ve done such a good job in quote-unquote, fracturing fairly tales, kind of turning it on its head, in sometimes not figuring out until the very end which one it is.”

Lee and the other fans know that whichever direction Grimm takes, the otherworldly journey will continue to be a thrill ride with euphoric drops, turns, surprises.

In Theaters – November 11th, 2011

Immortals is a big, splashy, eyeful of a movie that stars Mickey Rourke as the brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion, who along with his Heraklion army are tramping across Greece searching for the lost Bow of Epirus.

If the King nabs that invincible Bow, he can overthrow the Gods of Olympus and then rule the world.

It appears nothing can stop the king’s mission…until a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion‘s raids.

Naturally, it’s game on to stop the king at all costs.

Jack and Jill is another wacky Adam Sandler comedy, but this time Jack Sadelstein (Sandler), is a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles with his wife Erin (Katie Holmes) and kids.

Each year at Thanksgiving his twin sister Jill (also Sandler) descends on his home and drags a heap of baggage with her.  Jill pretty much twists Jack and his life into a pretzel.

On the upside, Sandler looks oddly great in drag.

J. Edgar is Director Clint Eastwood’s exploration of J. Edgar Hoover, the first head of the FBI, who held the position for nearly 50 years.

The controversial top cop is played by Leonardo DiCaprio and the movie examines both the public and private life of the man, who was able to make people quake with fear, while commanding respect.

Billy Crystal Back as Host of the “84th Academy Awards”

When the going gets tough, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences goes back to the proven well.

I just spoke with an Academy spokesperson and while a statement has yet to be released, she did confirm that Billy Crystal is onboard for the upcoming telecast and will replace Eddie Murphy as host of the 84th Academy Awards.

Murphy stepped down Wednesday, 11/09/11 after Producer Brett Ratner resigned Tuesday 11/08/11. Ratner stepped down after making a homophobic comment.

Certainly, it will come as a welcome relief to Oscar show fans, considering Crystal is one of the most popular hosts of the history of the Awards ceremony.

The Academy Awards airs Sunday, February 26th, 2012 and will broadcast live on ABC from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Zoe Lister-Jones, Confident “Whitney” Audience Will Grow

WHITNEY -- Pictured: Zoe Lister-Jones as Lily -- Photo by: Mitchell Haaseth/NBC

Though the Whitney Cummings series Whitney (Thursdays, 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, NBC) has struggled to find its audience, NBC has still given the sitcom a vote of confidence by extending the run for a full season.

That’s good news for the cast, particularly Zoe Lister-Jones, who stars as Whitney’s idealistic friend Lily on the show. Lister-Jones is pleased they are getting a chance to learn more about their characters.

Lily is on this route to marriage with her fiancé Neal (Maulik Pancholy). I think we’re going to get to explore maybe some of the ups and downs that something as stressful as a wedding can bring up in a relationship and in a friendship too,” she says hopefully. “What that also means to Whitney and Lily’s relationship. It keeps getting funnier and funnier. It’s really exciting to see where the show’s going.”

There are a number of guest stars joining the show in the next few weeks and though the actress wants to keep most of them a surprise for viewers, she tells EntertainmentHeartbeat.com that insult comic Lisa Lampanelli will be making an appearance. Both Cummings and Lampanelli are known for their somewhat raunchy comedy, but Lister-Jones was neither shocked nor surprised at the comments she heard from the women.

“It always so much fun and I think comics just love to snap on each other – and Lisa joined right into that,” she acknowledges. “You know, we’re all pretty dirty on the show so none of us are ever surprised. Our virgin ears are never upset about the dirty jokes that are happening. And Lisa was just the sweetest person. She’s known as the queen of mean in stand up comedy, but she was such fun to work with.”

Lister-Jones is confident the added episodes will translate into a bigger audience for Whitney.

“The ratings are going up every week,” she points out. “I think that’s what should be happening – it’s a steady incline. We’re coming in number two in the night for NBC, just ahead of The Office, which is a really big deal since we’re a new show.

“Some of the greatest shows took time. Friends and Seinfeld weren’t instant out-of-the-park hits and I think especially with ensembles it takes time for people to really get to know the characters and fall in love with them. So, hopefully that’s what’s happening.”

Mayim Bialik – The Real Brainiac of Brainiacs on “The Big Bang Theory”

Pictured: Mayim Bialik in a scene from THE BIG BANG THEORY on the CBS Television Network. Photo: Sonja Flemming/CBS ©2010 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The role of Amy started as a one-off performance for Mayim Bialik, but now she’s is fully entrenched in the storylines of The Big Bang Theory (Thursdays, 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, CBS).

Bialik, who is no stranger to hit shows having starred as Blossom on Blossom, says she worked hard to fit in as the new braniac on the sitcom and took her lead from another actor on the program.

“It started as a one episode or possible recurring role on the finale of season three,” Bialik recalls. “So, honestly, I just did my best Jim Parsons (Sheldon) impression for the audition and that’s sort of what I’ve kept doing.”

Though she’s a quirky and huge addition to the series, Bialik credits the writers with making Amy colorful. That means, sweeps will be fun for her and though she’s careful not to give up too much info in her response, Bialik does leak a couple of the upcoming details.

“There is a pretty heavy Amy and Sheldon episode coming up,” she spills. “A lot of interesting stuff coming up for our characters. I feel like anything can happen with this character and that’s sort of the fun of her. I like the stuff with Sheldon and I also like the sort of unpredictability of their relationship.”

Bialik is as smart, and probably much smarter, than Amy. The actress took time off after Blossom for her education and currently holds a PhD in neurosciences.

“My training is in neuroscience and I guess the writers and producers thought it was funny I had a PhD in neurosciences,” she admits laughing. “I studied Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Prader Willi syndrome as my thesis. My initial idea when my husband and I went to grad school was to be a research professor.”

It was the birth of the couple’s first son that prompted her to return to acting.

“We very quickly decided that we wanted a life that would allow me to be the primary care giver for our boys for a longer period of time than for what a research professor might have allowed,” she points out. “That’s why I decide to return to a lifestyle that, believe it or not, was more flexible schedule wise.”

No question The Big Bang Theory would still be a clever show without Bialik, but with her added to the cast, it’s a much funnier sitcom.
